Ikeja Lions Club International, District 404B2
has dedicated the renovated and upgraded
Skill Acquisition Centre of the Special Correctional Center For Boys, Oregun Ikeja.
Tagged as “Legacy Project”‘, it consists of
equipping the Skill Acquisition Centre,
painting, building a new toilet facility, fixing faulty electrical appliances and total overhauling of the structural deficiencies in the Center.
Professor Dayo Fagbohun ,the Distric Governor of Ikeja Lions Club District 404B2 who inaugurated the Legacy Project on Saturday commended the Ikeja Lions Club for turning the the dilapidated building of the Correctional Centre to a befitting edifice.
According to him,” for equipping the Correctional Centre from the state it was to its present state,Iam really delighted “.
He maintained that ” the renovation you have done has a multiplying effect not only on the institution but in the society as a whole.”
Fagbohun noted that Club, “has eradicated a lot of short comings and bad habits from the boys in the Correction Centre.”
“With electricity in the Centre ,no more dark and hiding place where bad activities and unholy acts will be taken place ” he said.
Responding on behalf of the Correctional Centre
the Principal, Bashir Iyapo thanked the District Governor and the Ikeja Lions Club members for their rescue mission adding that,” like Oliver Twist the Centre needs more help”
Iyapo revealed that some of the boys in the Centre were either brought by their parents or by government officials, adding that, “these are boys living in uncompleted buildings , running errands in the market places or children whose parents were indigent”.
He was overwhelmed with joy with what Lions Club stood for, as he unofficially joined the Club and was subsequently inducted by the District Governor .
Speaking to Newsmen, the President of Ikeja Lions Club, Lion Abiodun Olofin said the renovation and upgrading of the Skill Acquisition Centre was informed by one of the five cardinal principles of founding fathers of the Lions Club International which ” is impacting the society positively.Giving to the society the need of the needy”.
“When we look at the condition of the Centre,we discovered that the Centre lacked functional toilet,” most of the asbestos are removed from the roof , Skill Acquisition Centre bereft of necessary amenities and the entire building looks derelict,we discovered that these children should be giving a befitting learning environment before they can be corrected.”
According to him,” we care more about the Skill Acquisition Centre because like the saying goes,
idle hands is devil’s workshop “
Olofin revealed that the project could not have been completed without the ever supportive and ever encouraging members of the Club.
He commended the members of the Club for
going extra mile to ensure the success of the project,noting that,” they paid extra and extra more than their normal monthly subscription donating cash and materials needed for the project”
In attendance at occas.ion were past presidents, secretaries and persons including Lion Kolawole Anulopo, Lion Adesina, Lion Gbadebo Ajeigbe, Lion Olusegun Adetu, Lion(Barr.) Olabiran among others.
